Siemens Gamesa will expand its offshore blade factory in Hull, England by 41,600 square metres, more than doubling the size of the manufacturing facilities.

The Siemens Gamesa wind turbine factory in Hull is to be doubled in size following an investment of £186m. This investment will create 200 new jobs and allow the company to manufacture the next generation of offshore wind turbines and blades greater than 100 meters. This expansion is set to be complete by 2023 after the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Factory first opened in December 2016.

A portion of the investment will be funded through the UK governments GBP £160 million Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support Scheme. The Hull Plant located in Alexandra Dock, is the largest offshore wind manufacturing facility in the UK, which already employs around 1000 people.

This new investment will mean the operation will continue to be a major driver of economic growth in the Yorkshire and Humber region. They are currently being supplied to the 1.4 gigawatt Hornsea Two project off the Yorkshire coast which will be the world’s largest offshore wind power plant, powering the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.

Boris Johnson said: “The Humber region embodies the UK’s green industrial revolution, with new investment into developing the next generation of wind turbines set to create new jobs, export opportunities and clean power across the country”.

This joint investment of £186 million from the Government and Siemen Gamesa will give a boost to this important industrial heartland, creating and supporting thousands of good quality jobs across the region while ensuring it is on the frontline of developing the next generation of offshore wind turbines and blades.
