RWE’s 433MW project off Germany will use the newest turbines available and will produce green hydrogen

An offshore wind project being developed by RWE off Germany has been pre-selected for funding by the EU Innovation Fund.

The offshore wind project is being developed by Nordsee 2, in which RWE holds a 51% stake and Northland Power holds a 49% stake.

The wind farm with a planned grid capacity of 433MW is to be built north of the island of Juist and is scheduled to start commercial operation in 2026.

Together, the partners are “driving technological advancements” in the offshore wind industry by deploying new turbines that will be a minimum of 15MW each.

The partners aim to also demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of producing hydrogen at sea.

For this purpose, an electrolyser is planned to be integrated into the offshore wind farm.

The green hydrogen could then be used for vessel refuelling and to supply emergency power to the offshore substation or wind turbines.
