Internet giant Google LLC on Thursday announced plans to buy up to 1.6 GW of renewable power in what it says is the “biggest corporate purchase of renewable energy in history.”

The buy-up will be carried out through 18 deals, including mostly solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) that will lift Google’s renewables contracted portfolio to 5.5 GW. This will represent an increase of over 40%, the US search engine major said in a blog post.

Through the off-take deals, Google will stimulate over USD 2 billion (EUR 1.8bn) in investments into the construction of new wind and solar parks in the US, Chile and Europe. More specifically, the Internet company will purchase electricity from 720 MW of solar parks — 155 MW in North Carolina, 75 MW in South Carolina and 490 MW in Texas. In South America, meanwhile, it will add 125 MW of renewables capacity to the grid that will provide electricity for its data centre in Chile, while more deals will come from Europe, details about which will be shared in the coming days.

The massive renewables purchase is in line with Google’s sustainability efforts and its clean energy commitment. In 2017, the company became the first of its size to match its entire annual power consumption with renewables.
