Shell New Energies NL BV and RWE Generation SE have agreed to cooperate in the field of green hydrogen production, consumption and distribution in Europe, they announced this week.

The two companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that outlines their plan to identify specific project options to be developed toward investment decisions.

The units of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (AMS:RDSA) and RWE AG (ETR:RWE) are already involved together in two major European green hydrogen projects, namely NortH2 in the Netherlands and AquaVentus in Germany. Now, they will examine the use of offshore wind power on a gigawatt scale for the production of hydrogen in the industrial regions in the north-east of England such as Teesside and/or Humberside.

When assessing the future development of electrolysis-based green hydrogen projects, the pair will consider sites that are currently difficult to connect to the power grid and will look into the possibility of transporting the output of plants in such locations to customers via hydrogen pipelines.

Other aspects of the partnership include the development of new green hydrogen solutions for industrial customers and the evaluation of green hydrogen application in the mobility sector in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Also, the two companies will examine technical alternatives for the decarbonisation of RWE’s gas and biomass power plants.

We will also contribute our special expertise in the development of offshore wind projects as well as the provision of energy in the form of electricity, heat and, in the future, green hydrogen for our customers,” said Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG.
